Many times when I am working on a painting I spend time thinking about where to dive in. Where you start painting for the session that you are about to work on, you need to pick the spot you will be able to not accidentally drag your hand over fresh new paint.
So, choose wisely lol. Sometimes it happens, that’s OK. I try really hard to make sure I am starting top down, right to left when possible. There are times when it’s not possible however. The next section of the Broad Billed Mot Mot’s body feathers are layered where I will need to work from the bottom up, but be assured that I will still be working from right to left (I am right handed) so that I don’t drag my hand through the detail by accident.
Here’s some snap shots of the technique, enjoy!
